Lesotho Overland Excursion- 2 Nights / 3 Days
Day 1: Breakfast.
Departure at 08:00 at KarMichael Country Lodge, for the World Heritage Site of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park following the Mkomazi River up the Sani Valley to the South African Border Post. We continue to climb to an altitude of 2.874 m zigzagging upwards until we reach the Lesotho Border Post. Once formalities have been completed refreshment stop at the “Highest Pub in Africa”.
Superb view into the Sani Valley. Visit a Basotho mountain village where you will be told about the Basotho culture and tradition. Ascending the Black Mountain Pass up to 3.280m, following the Senqu River. Picnic lunch on route. We will continue past St. James Mission to the great Katse Dam, one the largest dams in the world. Arrive at the lodge at about 17:00. Spend the rest of the afternoon at your leisure and have dinner at the restaurant.
Overnight: Katse Dam Lodge, Lesotho
Day 2: Breakfast.
After breakfast, a guided tour of the Katse Dam wall. We travel on the Nelson Mandela Road (tar) and have lunch en route. The main road passes the Leribe Farmers Training Centre to the town of Hlotse. Strange, richly colored rock shapes, create the effect of a vast assembly of weird, petrified figures. Visit a local craft market near Butha-Buthe.
Ascending the twisting tar road to the summit of the Moteng Pass (2.840 m), one of the highest roads attained by normal two-wheel-drive vehicles in Southern Africa. Dinner at the lodge.
Overnight: Oxbow Lodge.
Day 3: Breakfast
Departing at 08:00 we will double back the route a little bit, twisting tar road to the summit of the Moteng Pass, with 2.840m one of the highest roads attained by normal two-wheel-drive vehicles in Southern Africa. This is the basalt roof of Southern Africa, a world of winter snows, frozen waterfalls, crisp clear air, and crystal streams with fat trout.
Descending into the Holola Valley (River of the Blue Crane), pass spectacular sandstone overhangs and rugged countryside to Butha-Buthe. This little town was named after King Moshoeshoe’s old mountain stronghold, Butha-Buthe, the Gatherer. We leave the country at the Caledonspoort Border Post / Clarens. Lunch at Golden Gate National Park, after lunch, proceed back to Underberg, via Nottingham Road, back to Himeville/ Underberg.

Every guest on tour is entering a rural and unspoiled African terrain. Therefore it is necessary to travel with a flexible and tolerant mind.
Accommodations, bathroom facilities, and meals are in most places very basic, simple, and rustic.
Most lunch stops are based on packed lunches or picnic meals.
There are no toilet facilities on route or very seldom.
We reserve the right to alter any routes or itineraries should circumstances, like weather, road conditions, unforeseen obstacles, etc. demand.
Some accommodations use generators for the supply of electricity, which switches off at 22:00, and gas geysers for the hot water supply.
