1N/2D Umkomaas
KwaZulu-Natal – South Coast
Overview
The Dive Resort is located in the quaint diving village of Umkomaas on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
Aliwal Shoal is a rocky reef, the remains of an ancient fossilised dune approximately 5 km offshore.
The reef hosts many hard and soft corals and an estimated 1,200 species of tropical and subtropical fish.
Aliwal Shoal was named after the near-sinking of the three-masted vessel “Aliwal,” captained by James Anderson in 1849.
Two wrecks near the reef are prime dive sites:
The Norwegian bulk carrier “Produce,” which sank in 1974
The “Nebo,” which sank in 1884
A fantastic variety of sharks can be seen, including White Tip Reef Sharks, Oceanic Blacktips, Dusky Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Zambezi (Bull) Sharks, Hammerheads, and occasional Great White sightings.
Umkomaas is located 48 km south of central Durban and was established in 1861 when a harbour was built to export sugar.
