We take off from Maseru- the capital city and go through T.Y., a small town where we can make a stopover and visit the local art markets for a variety of proudly Basotho hand-made craft shopping as well as scenic photos. After craft center hopping, we pass on to Kome caves in the rural of T.Y. The Kome Cave dwellings were built in the 19th century and are still lived in by the original families. The caves have been carefully restored and a visitors’ center has been attached to the site. They have been declared a National heritage site.
The Kome Caves are a group of cave dwellings made out of mud in the district of Berea, Lesotho 25 km east of Teyateyaneng.The caves are still inhabited by the descendants of the original people who built the caves.The site has been classified as a National Heritage Site.
History
The Kome Cave Dwellings were built and protected by Chief Teleka of The Basia(cat) Clan in the early 19th century. The main purpose of the cave dwellings was to serve as a hideout from adversaries during the drought in the late 18th century. The name Ha Kome comes from the Kome family in the Basia tribe, the first inhabitants of the cave.
Location
The Kome Cave Dwellings are located in the Berea District about a half an hour's drive from Teyateyaneng, the capital of the Berea District, and an hour's drive from Maseru, the capital of the Maseru District, and Lesotho. It is 21 km from Teyateyaneng.
Malimong caves can also be visited where Moshoeshoe (founder of Basotho nation)'s grandfather was wildly torn and eaten by the cannibals when they were on their way to Thaba-Bosiu.
