This is the oldest nature reserve in Lesotho, remote and rugged but predictably peaceful and stunningly beautiful... Set on the border with South Africa in the southern reaches of the Drakensberg at an average altitude of 2400m, the park is best known for its prolific birdlife, including the rare bearded vulture (or lammergeier), excellent trout fishing on the Tsoelikana River, waterfalls, rock paintings, and ancient Basotho stone dwellings, and seemingly endless open spaces just perfect for hiking.

Sehlabathebe is also characterized by impressive sandstone rock formations that project from the grasslands and the mountains. The Orange River, whose source can be found in the highlands of Lesotho, flows through the park on its long journey west to the sea.

The tranquil beauty of this isolated reserve harbors bucks and rare birds. There are also a few game animals: baboons, reedbuck, eland and the secretive oribi antelope, mongoose, otters, wild cats, and jackals. In good weather, you probably won't be in any hurry to leave, but at any time of year mists and rain can emerge out of nowhere, even on the finest of days, so come prepared.

Sehlabathebe. Enjoy traveling through the picturesque farmlands of East Griqualand with traditionally decorated huts. Entering Lesotho through Border Post. Arrive at Sehlabathebe Lodge and have a Picnic lunch at the Lodge, then visit the Wilderness area, and with a little luck we can see Reedbuck, Eland, Baboons, and jackals. There are numerous Rock Art Paintings at the National Park. Travel through the awesome countryside and arrive back at the lodge in the afternoon. Dinner at the lodge.

Overnight: Sehlabathebe Lodge, Self Catering

Sehlabathebe National Park is now a World Heritage Site and extension of uKhahlamba / Drakensberg Park
and is situated within the Maloti-Drakensberg Park and is a transitional property spanning the border between the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa. The Sehlabathebe National Park is (6,500 ha) in Lesotho and uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park (242,813 ha) in South Africa.

The Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site is renowned for its spectacular scenery as well as a wealth of rock paintings made by the San people over 4000 years. The images depict animals and human beings and represent the spiritual life of the San people and their beliefs. The property has numerous caves and rock shelters containing various rock art sites and many individual images throughout the Park itself.
