Sani Pass

The road drops from there down the torturous zig-zags of the Sani Pass as it descends from the mountain plateau down the Drakensberg Mountains and into the South African province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Sani Pass was originally a bridle trail for pack animals and was opened up to vehicle transport in the 1950s. The Sani Pass is the gateway to Lesotho’s Roof of Africa circuit that links the spectacular scenery of the Drakensberg with the attractions of Northern Lesotho, as well as South Africa’s Golden Gate National Park via Caledonspoort or the Monontsa Pass.

Moteng Pass- 2 Nights/ 3 Days-Required!

The Moteng pass is a steep tarred pass in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho, reaching a height of 2820 meters above sea level. It is one of two passes that links the town of Butha-Buthe with the diamond mining town of Mokhotlong, the other pass being the Mahlasela pass. Heavy snowfalls frequently close the pass in winter. The Pass is 7,9 km long, with the last stage being extremely dangerous in winter due to frequent patches of ice.

Tlaeeng Pass- 2 Nights/ 3 Days-Required!

The extreme road between Oxbow and Mokhotlong (114 km; approximately three hours) snakes and twists higher until almost at the halfway point it reaches the Tlaeeng Pass. The summit is one of the highest roads in Africa and is 3275 m above sea level. As you can imagine, the views here are truly outstanding, and the drive offers undulating mountain scenery and clean crisp air.

About 40 km after the pass the road starts to climb down towards Mokhotlong. Although tarred, the cold weather has taken its toll on this high stretch of the road and the ice has cracked it in parts causing potholes so drive carefully.
