Mount Moorosi

Mount Moorosi is a mountain in the Drakensberg mountain range on the banks of the Orange River in southern Basutoland. It acquired the name Moorosi's Mountain after Moorosi, the Chief of a local tribe, who, after committing acts deemed to hostile to the Cape Colonial administration, fortified himself on the mountain.

A Royal Engineer who was posted to the mountain after the siege began stated that: "Moorosi's Mountain is an isolated kopje, rising steeply on the south bank of the Orange River, about 1,500 feet, and connected with the range on the south by a low narrow nek."

For actions during the siege three Victoria Crosses were awarded to British troops: Peter Brown, Edmund Hartley and Robert Scott.

Geography and history of Mount Moorosi, including the Sebapala Valley, is a town situated in the Quthing region of Lesotho. This historical town is home to the cliff-fringed fortress of Chief Moorosi who was a thief in the 1850s. The Sebapala Valley is a magnificent high mountain valley located on the A4 road.

A campaign against Chief Moorosi was started in 1879 and led by the Baphuthi people. Together with the help of the residents of Mount Moorosi, a wildlife conservation program has been set up in order to help protect the Bearded Vulture.

All vehicles are able to visit the area via the newly built tar road that connects Qachas Nek in the East to Maseru in the South Western.
