Tiger Falls, Cascades, Look-Out Rock, Tiger Falls Circular Route
DAY 1: The Tiger Falls Loop
Is one of the most varied and rewarding short hikes in the northern section of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, based in the Mahai Camp area at the Royal Natal section. The circular route combines waterfalls, indigenous forest, mountain viewpoints, rivers and grassland into a single 6.5 km hike.

Main Attractions
Cascades
The hike begins by following the Mahai River upstream to the Cascades, a series of beautiful pools and small waterfalls. This is a popular picnic and swimming area and provides an excellent introduction to the route.
Look-Out Rock
Beyond the Cascades, the trail climbs steadily up the ridge. The ascent becomes steeper, with several zig-zag sections, before reaching the junction for Look-Out Rock. This viewpoint offers spectacular views over the Royal Natal National Park and the surrounding Drakensberg mountains.
Tiger Falls
Tiger Falls is the highlight for many visitors. The waterfall plunges approximately 50 metres over a cliff, forming a beautiful pool below. The route follows a contour path through the forest before descending to the falls. The area is noted for its scenic beauty and tranquility.
Day 2: Policeman’s Helmet
A distinctive rock formation in the Royal Natal section of the Drakensberg. When viewed from the approach route, it resembles the profile of an old-style policeman wearing a helmet. In the early morning light, shadows often highlight facial features such as the nose and cheekbones, making the resemblance even more striking. Despite being about 5 km from the base of the Amphitheatre, it appears much closer due to the dramatic mountain scenery.

Route Description
The walk begins by following the well-known Tugela Gorge trail along the right bank of the Thukela River. After about 1 km, hikers reach a junction where the Tugela Gorge route crosses a wooden bridge to the left. For Policeman’s Helmet, continue straight ahead and follow signs towards Devil’s Hoek, Vemvaan, and Policeman’s Helmet.
The trail passes through attractive stands of protea vegetation and several small stream crossings before reaching a fork. Here the route turns towards the Vemvaan Valley, traversing the hillside on a contour path. After roughly 1.5 km, hikers cross a stream—an important water point and a good place to refill bottles.
Although the path initially appears to lead away from the destination, it gradually zigzags deeper into the valley before turning left towards Policeman’s Helmet. The final approach follows a ridge through open grassland. Near the end, a short scramble up a wooden ladder brings hikers to a viewpoint only about 50 metres from the rock formation itself.
Day 3: The Cascades and Gudu Falls Hike, Royal Natal National Park
Nestled within the northern reaches of the uKhahlamba–Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site, the Cascades and Gudu Falls hike offers one of the most scenic and accessible day routes in the Drakensberg. Starting from Mahai Campsite or Thendele Camp in Royal Natal National Park, the trail reveals a landscape of dramatic cliffs, clear streams, and spectacular waterfalls set against the iconic Amphitheatre.
Led by a registered nature, culture, and mountain guide, the hike combines environmental interpretation, storytelling, and cultural insight. James is also a registered San Rock Art Custodian, and his guided excursions reveal the deeper heritage of the region—its ancient geology, rich biodiversity, and enduring human history. His interpretive approach helps hikers appreciate not only the scenic splendour of the park but also the cultural and ecological narratives that make it a UNESCO World Heritage treasure.
The route begins gently, following the Mahai River to the Cascades, a series of crystal-clear pools and small waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation. This first section, suitable for all fitness levels, takes around 45 minutes and provides ample opportunities for photography or a refreshing dip in the pools.
From the Cascades, the trail ascends gradually through forested slopes and open grassland to reach Gudu Falls, approximately 4.5 km one way (9 km return) with a total elevation gain of about 500 m. The moderate hike typically takes 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on pace and stops. Gudu Falls is the undoubted highlight: a 70-metre waterfall plunging into a cool, shaded gorge carpeted with moss and ferns. The thunder of falling water, combined with panoramic views of the escarpment, creates one of the most memorable settings in the Drakensberg.
Day 4: The hike to Camel's Hump
Is a rewarding and dramatic half-day walk in the Northern Drakensberg. Covering roughly 8 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 320 meters, the route typically takes around four hours to complete.
The trail begins in the lower foothills of the Drakensberg, winding through undulating grassland and gradually drawing closer to the distinctive sandstone formations that define this part of the range with its distinctive camel-shaped ridge. Massive ridges and buttresses rise above the path, their warm ochre tones catching the light and shifting in colour as the day progresses.
As altitude is gained, the views expand dramatically. One of the great visual rewards of the hike is the distant but unmistakable presence of the Amphitheatre, its towering basalt wall stretching across the skyline and lending the landscape a scale and grandeur difficult to match elsewhere in the country.
Day 5: The Tugela Gorge Route
To a viewing point overlooking Ribbon Falls and the Tugela Falls. This route offers magnificent views of the Amphitheatre, Eastern Buttress and Sentinel.
The duration of the hike is some 5 hours, and the distance is some 8km. Expect an elevation gain of some 500m
