7 Nights/ 8-Days- Camping and Home Stay

This tour exposes you to the real Basotho lifestyle and culture while experiencing the warm Basotho hospitality. The trip takes you through the remote Lesotho areas where most of the trips will be incurred on traditional Basotho ponies as some of the areas cannot be easily accessed by motor cars. The trip will take you through the highlands of Lesotho where major tourist destinations will be explored and the biggest Lesotho projects visited. The journey will finally end in Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho.

Day 1- Malealea via Morija

From the airport, the group will take a 45min drive to the Morija museum (where cultural items, historical artifacts, and archives are kept). The tour will then continue to Malealea (a pony trekking center in Lesotho).

On arrival at Malealea, the group with have pre-packed lunch at the village while embarking on the day's activities. The group will visit the local school and take a tour through the village where they will interact with the local villagers. The famous traditional Sangoma (traditional healer/herbalist) will also be visited for consultation.

The group will be entertained by a local band at the campfire over a relaxed evening next to the campfire while dinner is being served.

Day 2- Overnight pony trekking to Ribaneng waterfall

The group will pack their luggage on horseback; ride on traditional Basotho ponies with an experienced Mosotho guide through the remote areas to Ribaneng waterfall. The group will then spend the night in the small village of Ketane in Basotho homes. Before heading back to the lodge the next morning, the group will have a hearty Basotho breakfast served by a local family.

Day 3- Depart for Semonkong

n arrival back from Ribaneng, the group immediately jumps into the bus and heads to Semonkong known as ‘The Place of Smoke’. The place boasts the spectacular Maletsunyane Falls which thunder from a height of 206m, as one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa. The journey will be explored through the rugged mountains of Lesotho with experienced guides.

On their arrival, the team will have a short walk into the village then a relaxed evening next to the campfire and can have a taste of Basotho's traditional home-brewed beer.

Day 4- Semonkong

A hearty breakfast at the lodge and then a series of outdoor adventures starts. Our vehicle will be on standby to take the group to Maletsunyane falls. The group will have a chance to hike to the bottom of the waterfall where swimming and Trout fishing (fly- fishing only and own equipment essential) can be enjoyed. Trout will be served for dinner...

Day 5 –Mohale

After breakfast, leave Semonkong and embark on an off-road experience in the Ramabanta valley and visit the Cultural Village. After this thrilling experience, then travel to Mohale Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands water project. Frequent stops en-route allow for photographs to be taken of this spectacular landscape and mountain passes.

Day 6– Katse

The view of Katse Dam is incredible as the flooded valleys go on for 45km.

A guided tour of the dam wall and Katse Botanical Garden may also be arranged.

Day 7- Tsehlanyane via Liphofung

Liphofung Nature Reserve, the “place of the eland” cave occupies an important place in Lesotho history. The cave is in fact a large overhang in the Clarens sandstones, which is a typical feature of the Lesotho lowlands region. Proceed to Tsehlanyane National Park, located deep in the front range of the Maluti Mountain with headquarters at the foot of the Holomo pass in Leribe. The park is reached by a 32km-gravel access road that leaves the main A1 route 8 km south of Butha-Buthe.

Day 8- Maseru via Kome via Thaba-Bosiu

Proceed to Kome Cave dwellings built in the 19th century and still lived in by the cannibal descendants. The caves have been carefully restored and a visitor’s Centre has been attached to the site. They have been declared a National Heritage site. Journey then continues to Thaba-Bosiu, this is where the Basotho nation was born. The name Thaba Bosiu means the ‘Mountain at Night’. This is where you will get a cultural and heritage experience. Arrival at Maseru airport late afternoon.

General Information - Lesotho Overland Tours

Every guest on tour is entering a rural and unspoiled African terrain. Therefore it is necessary to travel with a flexible and tolerant mind.

Accommodations, bathroom facilities, and meals are at most places very basic, simple, and rustic.

Most lunch stops are based on packed lunches or picnic meals.

There are no toilet facilities on route or very seldom.

We reserve the right to alter any routes or itineraries should circumstances, like weather, road conditions, unforeseen obstacles, etc. so demand.

Some accommodations use generators for the supply of electricity, which switches off at 22:00, and gas geysers for hot water supply.

Please note Katse Dam Lodge has 8x doubles, 6x singles + flats that can accommodate 12 people, two share bathrooms e.g rooms 1 & 2 share bathrooms,s, etc.

Please bring soft bags only for this trip.
