Package Itinerary

Day 1: L, D

Depature at 9:00 from Underberg to the World Heritage Site of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, follow the Mkomazana River up the scene Sani valley to the South African Border Post (border formalities).

We continue up the Sani Pass, which was built by David Alexander between 1948 and 1954 viewing the Hodgon’s Peaks and the Giants Cup. Climbing to an altitude of 2.874m and zigzag upwards beneath towering cliffs, buttresses, past waterfalls and unique flora and bird life.

After completed the border formalities at the Lesotho Border we arrive at the Sani Top Chalet and the Highest Pub in Africa (2.874m) for refreshments.

Thereafter we proceed to the village and the Basotho culture will be explained. Ascending the Black Mountain pass up to 3.280m, following the Senqu River. Picnic lunch en route. Arrival at our self-catering accommodation in the afternoon. Dinner at the guesthouse in fully equipped kitchen.

Overnight: St. James Guest Lodge, within St. James Mission

Day 2: B, L

After breakfast at the guest lodge there is an option of going for a walk, do horse riding at Molumong ((own expense) or joining the church service at 9:00 at St. James Mission with singing and dancing. Late morning we double-back the route from the day before to the Sani Top Chalet. On the veranda we have a beautiful view overlooking the Sani Valley. Our Guide will take care of the border formalities. We are descending the legendary Sani Pass to Underberg.

General Information – Lesotho Overland Tours

  • Every Guest on tour is entering a rural and unspoiled African terrain. Therefore it is necessary to travel with a flexible and tolerant mind.
  • Accommodations, bathroom facilities and meals are at most places very basic, simple and rustic.
  • Most lunch stops base on packed lunches or picnic meals.
  • There are no toilet facilities on route or very seldom
  • We reserve the right to alter any routes or itineraries should circumstances like weather, road conditions and unforeseen obstacles etc. so demand. Some accommodations use generators for the supply of electricity which switches off at 22h00 and gas geysers for hot water supply. Only soft bags, no big suitcases.
