Explore More About Cobham Nature Reserve:

Cobham is situated in the Southern Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa’s first cultural and environmental World Heritage Site, and is approximately 150 km from Pietermaritzburg. The exceptional natural beauty of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site is evident in its soaring basaltic buttresses, golden sandstone ramparts, rolling high-altitude grasslands, steep-sided river valleys, and rocky gorges.

The area has incredibly rich biodiversity including many endemic species. This reserve is managed together with Vergelegen Nature Reserve to form one management section of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site and is approximately 52 000 ha in extent.

If one had to ignore the scenery, the campsite could be considered somewhat average. It’s really just an unlevel, large clearing beneath some gum and pine trees with scattered braai areas and two small and fairly basic ablution blocks. There are no power points and there are only a few taps, which for many campers could be quite inconvenient.

Cobham State Forest area is dominated by vast expanses of grassland which turn from emerald green in spring and summer to shades of gold, brown, and purple in autumn and winter. The grasslands are interspersed with rocky outcrops/boulders, streams and rivers, and indigenous forests. The area has large numbers of small upland lakes or tarns and there is an area in Cobham called the Lake District.
