Mashai Lodge is a self-catering (communal kitchen lodge, based on Backpacker style- RUSTIC and is situated in the town of Mashai overlooking Sehonghong town. It even has a thatched swing chair overlooking the Sunset in the West and a public bar!
Mashai was a Trading Post run by one of the early settlers. When the British Protectorate fell away in 1966, the Moteane brothers took over and made it into a self-catering lodge with a bar area. The older of the two brothers is now the Ambassador for South Africa in Lesotho. The scenic location is ideal for walking, mountain biking, and horse riding.
The lodge is simple and rustic and offers self-catering facilities with a fully equipped kitchen. Bathroom facilities on a communal basis. Bring your soap, towel, torch, etc. Hot water supply by gas geyser and electricity by solar energy.
The accommodation consists of 1 rondavel with 2 single beds and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. (More rondavels in construction)
The main house offers accommodation in a backpacker style, rooms which sleep 2, 4 and 5 guests. Guests have to consider maintenance problems. NO telephones.
The bar is very spacious and offers a good variety of drinks at reasonable prices.
Satellite TV is available.
Mashai Lodge is a basic lodge, consisting of a couple of rondavels in the Sehonghong/Mashai area
It is just a stopover to break the journey when traveling to and from Sehlabathebe National Park. If you are coming from Katse Dam it will take about 4-5 hours to get there and from the top of Sani Pass about 6 or 7 hours.
Location:
From Katse and Sani you would turn off at the Taung turn off (29° 34′ 34.367 S 28° 44′ 2.969 E) to get onto the main road that accesses Sehlabathebe via Sehonghong. There is no signpost so it is best to take the above coordinates.
